I took one of those burn out inventories and was shocked to see how much compassion I’d lost for my patients. 

My career helping people had turned into just a job. I would clock in, try to fight for good medicine among insane rules, and go home, exhausted. 

The day at work was governed by Time, with a capital “T” because it trumps everything. Time is money. And lack of time leads to truncated care and mistakes. 

I had lost the excitement of my craft and replaced it with frustration over the institution of medicine. 

Medicine sucks you dry.

Compassion is a top fatality in this career and it’s insidious. Many physicians I talk to couldn’t imagine any other career when they first picked medicine. Now, they would reconsider. 

This world needs their passionate doctors back. How can exhausted physicians revive their zest for this career?
